I used to send myself off any and every jump, cliff, ledge, you name it, but these days I am more of a ski half day than après girl. Skiing has brought me so many friendships, as well as fun opportunities to travel to cool mountains like Aspen and the Ötztal Alps in Sölden, Austria and is probably a large reason I have remained in Colorado my entire life. After graduating from CU Boulder in 2023, I landed in Denver. I played all throughout high school, but after deciding not to play in college, I went 4 years itching to get back on the court. I fell into coaching when I moved to CO 2 years ago and have had a blast ever since getting to share my love for the sport and play again after so many years. My family has always done a great job keeping my birthday and Christmas separate. I also played soccer and softball in high school but I think I loved playing viola most. I was a journalism major with a sociology focus and needed an upper division sociology class. I chose “Animals in Society” — thinking it looked easy. I went in with the attitude of “I’m not going to let this hippie class ruin all the things I eat,” and I hardly ever attended the class. Because of that, I needed extra credit at the end of the semester, so I went on an elective field trip to volunteer at Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary in Deer Trail, Colorado (the birthplace of the rodeo, ironically). I met a really cool cow named Sherman that had escaped from a truck heading to a slaughter house, a sassy turkey named Melvin, and several chickens that were rescued from a processing plant after Hurricane Katrina. After cleaning out their stalls and spending the day with them, I couldn't eat meat again. I’m not a judgy veggie though and the rest of my family still eats meat. Our boys are so much fun, and we enjoy seeing things through their eyes. Especially my oldest Macklin, who just turned 7. He is artsy and curious and I learn so much just from the things I have to Google when he asks me obscure questions. My youngest, Collin, just turned 3 and is our sour patch kid. He is so sweet and fun but also tests my patience daily, sometimes hourly. He knows more dinosaur names than I ever will and sure lets us know if we don’t say the right name for the right dino. I was a housecleaner, a (semi) competitive ballroom dancer, a graduate student at NYU and Paris Sciences Po, the editorial director of JCrew (true story), a solo traveler, the editor-in-chief of ID magazine, a waitress on St. Marks, and Martha Stewart’s book editor at Random House. I loved making books and published hundreds of art and design books, artists’ bios and lifestyle books. My favorites were the ones I fashioned from my own obsessions. Cooper, meet CSG. Back in September of 2020, I adopted Cooper, which ended up being the best decision I’ve ever made! He’s an Australian Shepherd, Rottweiler, Border Collie mix, and the one breed he likes to think he is is human. He has the biggest, weirdest personality. Ever since I was little (I think I was 5 years old), my family and I have been going to Great Guana Cay in Abaco, Bahamas because it’s so beautiful, but primarily because my grandpa and grandma have a house on the island. This is where they lived most of the year, while we lived in Illinois, so visiting them in the Bahamas was our one time a year to see them. While I loved eating all of the baked goodies that she made, I mainly loved baking alongside her. She had such a huge influence on me that we would regularly bake together - whether it was for birthdays or holidays or just a random day/night. I grew to love and become pretty good at baking if I don’t say so myself that I thought I would own a bakery one day. And who knows, maybe I still will. I’m from a little town in the Northwestern suburbs of Chicago called Batavia, and if you’ve ever asked me where I’m from I probably just said Chicago because odds are you’ve never heard of Batavia. Growing up in Batavia there was nothing I wanted more than to get out. I was over the small town, sick of just driving past cornfields, and I wanted to see and do more. But my parents and older brother always told me that one day I would reflect on growing up Illinois, and appreciate it. And don’t tell them, but they’re right. We stayed in the amazing indigenous village of Yorkin, Costa Rica tucked deep in the jungle where the rising and setting of the sun dictated our sleep. With no running water or electricity, I learned to live at the mercy of nature. Each morning after breakfast, paired with the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had, we crossed over into Panama. I learned my strength carrying cinderblocks up mountains and shoveling hard clay to build a functioning water source for the Panamanian village. No, I did not go to Ohio State, but I still bleed Scarlet and Grey. My grandparents met on The Ohio State campus during their undergrad. My grandfather played both football and basketball for the Buckeyes and pictures of him still hang in the stadium. My grandmother’s father and grandfather played for Ohio State… so you can say it is in the blood. Every Saturday my grandmother, now 95, and I have a pre-game call, we talk about the team, get each other pumped for the game and catch up on our week. Ohio State Football has enriched my relationship with my grandmother in a really beautiful way. I am a cat mom. I rescued Moscow five years ago when he was all ears, whiskers, and paws. I have never wanted kids but being a cat mom gives me purpose and so much joy! He is a Maine Coon and Norwegian Forest Cat mix, so he is incredibly loving, comes to his name and follows me around. Moscow is a polydactyl, meaning he was born with extra toes, so though he is no longer a kitten, he is still mostly paws. I participated in competitive gymnastics throughout elementary, middle and high school but when I was heading to college, I realized I wanted to try something different. I joined the crew team my freshman year of college having never rowed before. I am most definitely not a morning person, but I’ve seen hundreds of Boston sunrises sitting in a boat on the Charles River. My most memorable moments from being on the Simmons Crew were rowing at the Head of the Charles (the largest 2-day regatta in the world) in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Unfortunately, I don’t row anymore but I am deeply grateful for what it gave me: my best friends, my work ethic, and my love of exercise. Sadly, the early morning alarms didn’t stick. I drove through and stopped in many states I’d never visited. I loved every minute of the first road trip so I did it again. Last summer, I drove to Maine and then back again stopping in different states along a different route. All of these trips have sparked a desire to see all 50 states (whether I drive or fly to each destination). Most recently, I flew to Oregon and drove to Washington. Next on my list, I hope to drive to Utah to see some national parks. Prior to that, I had very little knowledge about beer or the brewing process nor was I a big beer drinker. I’ve been home-brewing with my family on and off for 5 years now and what I love most is the amount of time I’ve been able to spend with my aunt and uncle and our shared love of beer. We’ve brewed IPAs, Saisons, barleywines, wee heavies, cherry lambics and stouts to name a few. I’ve been a voracious reader ever since I started reading and can often be found sitting in the same spot with my nose in a book all day. I love anything fiction: detective and mystery, fantasy, thriller, historical fiction, literary fiction, young adult, the list goes on and on. I’ll occasionally throw in a non-fiction biography, memoir or history book into the mix. My TBR (to be read) list is long and ever-growing. I have boxes, and boxes, and boxes of books waiting to be opened. In the past few years, I’ve even made a book tree for Christmas! In part, because of the pandemic, in part because Carey Mulligan puts up a performance that demands her presence in every single awards conversation. Part revenge film, part social commentary, it is a stunner that will have people talking on the order of Gone Girl and Midsommar. Well, here it is. Another Sundance standout, Minari is a gorgeous portrait of what the American dream means and the end people will go to to achieve it. Steven Yeun delivers a career best performance as a Korean-American father who moves his family to Arkansas to pursue his dream of farming. Writer-director Lee Isaac Chung tells this semi-autobiographical tale in a classic format that nevertheless feels fresh. But before that happens, Patty Jenkins’ long-awaited Wonder Woman follow-up will prove the concept on Christmas Day. WW1984 is the only entry on this list I’ve yet to experience, but the early buzz suggests it’s a marvel that harkens back to a different era of DC storytelling — light and bright and optimistic — and promises to close the year as soundly as Birds of Prey opened it. A few short weeks after that, Michaela Coel’s new series landed on HBO and BBC with aplomb. I May Destroy You is compulsive television about the mania of exploring your own truth and reconciling facts you’d rather forget. It’s sharp, edge-of-your seat viewing that’s at least as uncomfortable as it is engrossing. And it may finally get Coel the attention she deserves as a creator. Moira Rose is an icon and I cry every time I think about Simply the Best. BUT it’s high time we start talking about another Canadian comedy series: Kim’s Convenience. With four full seasons on Netflix and a fifth due to premiere in Canada in January, there’s no better time to get obsessed with this charming portrait of a Korean-Canadian family who run a convenience store in Toronto. Manalorian fans might recognize Paul Sun-Hyung Lee who popped up as Captain Carson Teva in season two, but who has been winning hearts as Mr. Kim, aka Appa for years. There is something so big hearted about Kim’s Convenience that it almost feels too good to actually be good. But what it is, is great. It bowed to tremendous acclaim and high ratings, but rumor has it the streamer opted not to continue paying to hold star Zoe Kravitz’ time when no one could figure out how to safely shoot in a pandemic. But, High Fidelity is worth the heartache. Based upon the Nick Hornsby novel and John Cusack film of the same name, High Fidelity swaps the angsty record store male protagonist for a messy female protagonist who is just as flawed and frustrating. What an act of revolution. The series still hits all the points you’d expect, but subverts expectations in a really delightful way. And, as is to be expected, the soundtrack slaps. Choose 5, 10, 15 or 20 floors and do your best to best the ghosts before time runs out on each floor. With themed levels and an assortment of floor challenges, there is a lot of replayability to be had here, and more challenge than you might expect. While nothing replaces the joy of an Overcooked couch co-op sesh, taking it online with voice chat comes pretty close and it’s quarantine friendly fun. You get to choose from a host of unique survivors and baddies as well as iconic franchise characters like Freddy, Leatherface and the Demogorgon. There will probably be screams, but there will be shrieks of laughter too. And if your pals don’t all have headsets, Molly will probably let you use her Zoom to facilitate a group chat. With witchcraft and monsters, myth and even love, Circe is the kind of book you want to get lost in. And to that end, the ethereal narration on the audiobook serves it very well. Portrait was my absolute favorite film in 2019 — a year when Greta Gerwig made a completely remixed Little Women with Queens Saoirse, Emma, Florence, Meryl, Laura and Timothee. Yes, Timothee. You can imagine what won my heart for a close second place. But even Greta couldn’t unseat this tale of artist and subject caught in a no-win situation. Noemie Merlant and Adele Haenel cast a spell as they launch us into an examination of the female gaze, the nature of love and questions of fate. After you watch, read Celine’s incredible interviews which feature details about her exquisitely lovely real-life romance with Adele and her hot take on why Titanic was such a smash. Spoiler alert: She calls it “totally queer” and I understand so much more about literally my entire life now. Also, can we just talk about what a way with words this woman has? “...My director of photography Claire Mathon and I wanted to shoot digital for one reason. We wanted to give back to these women from the past their hearts, their desire, the rush of blood to the cheek. It was a love story, of course, but it was also a movie about the rise of desire. We wanted to look at desire, which is something we rarely see because of the strong convention in cinema of love at first sight. We always agree that of course you’re going to totally fall in love. Digital was about the rush of blood.” I’m not swooning, you’re swooning. ANYWAY, if we’re back in the office in June, this will be the Pride month pick for Friday Films and I will sob. A chaotic look into the lives of a group of unlikely pals with only their home in an abandoned hospital ward in common, Crashing is the kind of airy fun that suits in the midst of a pandemic. PWB masterfully adapted the Villanelle novels into a procedural-drama about an MI5 agent (Sandra Oh) and an eccentric assassin (Jodie Comer) who are plunged into an obsessive game of cat-and-mouse that is riotously funny as often as it is flatout suspenseful. Fun fact: PWB stepped away as showrunner for season two, but her successor, Emerald Fennell made my favorite film at Sundance, which will more than likely be my favorite film of the whole year. Promising Young Woman was to have bowed in April, but corona ruined that, stay tuned for a release later this year. And in the meantime, watch as much Killing Eve as possible to get your fix of murders and exotic locales. The first two seasons of Killing Eve are on Hulu. Like Queer Eye, but somehow even more inclusive and purposeful, We’re Here is fire from the start. Here’s the deal: HBO gave Shangela, Bob the Drag Queen and Eureka a tricked out traveling caravan (one of the cars looks like a purse!) and sent them to small towns to serve LEWKS, but mostly hope, where it’s needed most. In the first episode, we travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where a young gay man who feels voiceless, a history professor who wants to deepen his empathy and a conservative Christian mother who wants to prove the change in herself to her estranged daughter agree to take part in a drag show to uplift the community. Once you’ve found out what’s up with “Jessica. Only child. Illinois, Chicago” you might find yourself wanting to see more of what Bong Joon-Ho has done. In truth, a whole lot of wild things: Train to Busan, Mother (not the Jennifer Lawrence joint I slept through in Vegas, but a monster flick) and The Host among them. But Snowpiercer stars none other than Captain America, serves the apocalyptic feeling of the present moment and was criminally slept on when it came out in 2013. An argument could even be made that it out Fury Road-ed Mad Max: Fury Road two years before any of us saw Fury Road. And hear this, it’s on Netflix. Extra credit double feature: Zodiac and Memories of Murder. David Fincher’s true crime procedural masterpiece (and my favorite movie) pairs incredibly with Bong Joon Ho’s first feature, Memories of Murder, also a true crume procedural masterpiece. The challenge here is that Memories of Murder is not available on any streaming platform, is currently out of print on DVD in the US and has never been released on Blu-ray. I had to borrow a pal’s South Korean DVD and reset the region on a Playstation to watch it. Being an insufferable know it all, I typically responded that he was right there for anyone who bothered to look, most famously as one half of the team behind What We Do in the Shadows. The vampire satire was, and is, a great watch, but for my money, Taika’s lesser-known romp, Hunt for the Wilderpeople gives a much stronger taste of the heart, charm and quirk he brought to the Marvel Universe and later, to Jojo Rabbit. I promise you’ll walk away with a boatload of new catchphrases and a desperate need for a Kiwi accent. Featuring Hugh Grant in the greatest turn in his entire career, and a whole host of British film royalty, Paddington 2 is as sweet and wholesome as the marmalade the titular teddy loves so dearly. You don’t need to see the first film to walk in and be instantly enchanted by Paddington and the Browns. Warm and fuzzy without hazarding into saccharine, this comic caper is the perfect balm in an uncertain world. We probably don’t deserve Paddington, but I’ll be damned if we don’t need to take a few lessons from him. If you haven’t heard the good word, I’m happy to fill you in on why this scrappy little studio has my entire heart. With a single A24 entrant as my self-imposed limitation, this spot had to go to Lady Bird. Greta Gerwig’s intimate and aching love letter to mother-daughter dynamics and unspectacular coming of age made everyone who ever danced to Justin Timberlake at a school event feel seen. With Saoirse Ronan, Beanie Feldstein and Lucas Hedges alongside Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts, it’s a testament to the fact that talent attracts talent. She loves to laugh and make others laugh. In pre-school, Kristie’s class put on a ballet recital for family and friends in which the group danced on stage dressed as skunks. One of the moves involved shaking their tails towards the audience. When the crowd burst into laughter, Krsitie took note and continued to only shake her tail until the end of the show.
